Dr. Hosam Attia is the kind of doctor who brings both expertise and genuine compassion to every patient he sees. As a proud member of The Eye Experts team, he’s a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in vitreoretinal surgery—think intricate procedures for the retina and vitreous, the gel-like substance in the eye. With over 30 years in the field, Dr. Attia has dedicated his career to helping people preserve and restore their vision, especially in communities where eye health challenges are all too common.
His journey started back in Egypt, where he earned his medical degree from Cairo University in 1994, standing out with academic excellence that earned him merit-based stipends throughout school. After an internship and early residency there, he made the move to the U.S., diving into research roles at prestigious spots like Mount Sinai and NYU before completing his ophthalmology residency at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. He capped it off with a high-volume vitreoretinal fellowship at Albany Medical Center from 2010 to 2012, where he not only honed his surgical skills but also taught residents and managed complex cases involving uveitis and other retinal issues.
Throughout his career, Dr. Attia has been a trailblazer, often stepping in to build or expand retina services from the ground up. He’s founded practices, equipped departments, trained staff, and provided top-tier care in places like Florida, Kentucky, and even Saudi Arabia during locum stints at major teaching hospitals. Since 2020, he’s been in the Rio Grande Valley delivering full medical and surgical vitreoretinal services to our largely Hispanic population. This area sees a high prevalence of diabetes-related eye complications, and Dr. Attia thrives on tackling those—focusing on diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, and more. He’s all about premium, personalized eye care, using advanced techniques like vitrectomy and laser treatments to give patients the best shot at clear vision. Patients rave about his thorough explanations, bedside manner, and commitment, often rating him 4.8 to 5 stars across platforms for taking the time to answer questions and provide follow-up care. He’s earned awards like Compassionate Doctor Recognition and Patients’ Choice multiple times, reflecting how he treats every case with the urgency and care it deserves.
